I love this. I already subscribed and am considering getting the paid.
We unschooled our son when he went into 9th grade and COVID hit. Best thing ever...
I began the "unschooling" myself as a writer the first time I read Cormac McCarthy. I thought the publisher had left out punctuation!! OMG. I felt so out of touch.
Yay! I hope you and your son are both enjoying the process and reaping the benefits of the unschool track. And you're ahead of me on the Cormac McCarthy, since I've not read any. Was the punctuation (or lack of) the biggest unschooling change/challenge you took from the McCarthy?
One challenging but rewarding author for me is Will Self. Deliberately difficult but well worthwhile.
I was so "schooled" I felt guilty when we went to this modality! :) Everybody we knew questioned us on our choice. Luckily, Oregon is pretty loose in regards to what you're doing as long as you can pass the tests... which luckily he did. Going great now, he is 17.
I first McCarthy's stuff after No Country For Old Men came out as a movie, I quick got the book on Kindle and was like, "Why is there no punctuation??" I thought the publisher had gone insane. Luckily, before I asked for a refund, I found my answer. That was my, as they say, aha moment in writing. We don't have to follow any rules! Freeing. Only took me forty years.
I will have a look at Will Self. I typically like an easy read these days, but trying to reengage my brain from social media atrophy... Thanks, Martin!
I've been greedy, doing both school and unschool. When I was a kid, I'm surprised most of my teachers coped or, at least, let me get away with all my cheek. 😆
One or two encouraged it... They made the biggest impact and I still think fondly of them today. Just goes to show that even schooling can veer off the rote rules and bring amazing results. 💪
Great advice and substack suggestion. I'm really keen on leaning more about improving my writing technique. Love your suggestion for supporting writers too.
Thanks, Tania. I love how the Substack platform currently serves to bring lots of writers together in a community of support and learning. Long may that continue!
Thanks for the best wishes, Alison! I'm delighted the start of the SubSubSubSub project has been a success.
Your genre wheel idea is gold. And I need to spend more time on the gem of the Em (dash). I've had great fun working through the riches in your Unschool and I hope many others can too.
I love your idea of supporting writers this way. Unschool for Writers sounds like a great newsletter. I'll check it out!
Thanks, Jenn! And now you're the first person to comment at the very start of "The Substantial Substack Subscription Submissions" mission. ✨🎉
SubSubSubSub! 💛

Martin! Thank you--deeply--for sharing my newsletter. I appreciate how you've picked out bits and pieces to share, along with your own take.
What a wonderful project. Wishing you the best, and looking forward to more of your Sub-sub-sub discoveries!
